Forest Rugby working with the community to make a difference!
Following the fantastic success of last years Charity Day where we raised over $17,000 to fund mental health and disability programs in our local community, Forest Rugby Club is proud to announce its 2017 charity partners – The Manly Community Centre and Bushlink – a part of Northside Enterprise Inc. Charity Day will be celebrated on 5 August 2017 at our home game at Melwood Oval against University of NSW, which also coincides with the Club’s Sponsor’s Day, where we recognise the wonderful contributions from our corporate partners.
We also welcome and acknowledge the backing of two long standing supporters and contributors to the Club – John Courtney and Sean Ledbury, who have joined forces with the Club for the first time as a formal Charity Day Sponsors. Their respective businesses of JAC Electrical, as the charity day gold sponsor, and Packsize Pty Ltd, as the charity day silver sponsor, have generously contributed to the cause. 100% of their support will go to the designated programs and have a significant impact within our community.
Forest Rugby is dedicated to making a difference in our community. As such, our charity partners are carefully selected with two main criteria in mind. We target charities that dedicate themselves to supporting the vulnerable and helping to cause change, in areas of substantial social importance in addition to ensuring our funds can be dedicated to programs directly operating in our local community. Whilst no doubt Rugby is a key focus of the Club, the Committee is passionate about its role and responsibility to contribute more broadly to our community and society in general.
The Manly Community Centre (MCC) is a community based not-for-profit organisation that has served our local community since 1977. Specifically, Forest Rugby has partnered with the MCC to make a difference in two very important areas of domestic violence and homelessness. Sadly, statistics show that domestic violence and homelessness continue to be prevalent and major societal problems. On the other side, both issues are preventable and support to the right programs can have a material impact directly on the lives of sufferers, or with earlier intervention, those at risk. The MCC have a number of strategies and programs to support victims and potential victims of domestic violence, and to enhance the wellbeing and safety of the local homeless and at risk population. Funds raised will go directly to supporting these specific areas of MCC’s strategic focus.
Bushlink, part of Northside Enterprise Inc, is dedicated to creating real and valued employment for people with disability, through a network of working environmental project teams. They operate in conjunction with their clients, advocates and partners under the “Spirit of Inclusion” to support people with disability, helping them to hold real jobs and become empowered. Jobs with Bushlink develop self-respect, a high degree of pride and sense of self-worth for their valued employees. Again, Forest Rugby is proud and privileged to partner with such an amazing organisation and help to directly improve life outcomes for people with disability in our community.
Forest Rugby would also again like to acknowledge the ongoing and generous support it receives from major sponsor – Shields Gilman Real Estate who graciously donate the temporary use of its coveted and traditional space on the front of the Forest first grade jersey, to allow the Club to attract Charity Day sponsors for special the one-off jerseys to be worn by the team on the day. A big thank you to Peter Gillman and Sally Shields Gillman for your support.
What can you do? Identifying the cause and gaining corporate support is only half the job. The Club invites all its supporters and members of the local community to Melwood Oval on 5 August 2017 to be part of the day, other fundraising initiatives and traditional jersey auction. Watch out also for more information about the inaugural Forest Rugby Melwood Sleep Out, where a group of supporters will have the opportunity to bare the cold and sleep overnight on Melwood oval, to raise funds and awareness of domestic violence and homelessness in society.
